Arezu Omaid, a member of Young Women for Change, has received the medal for the best female biker of Afghanistan. In addition to biking, she teaches English in a language center, works as a volunteer for YWC and helps other female athletes connect to the sports clubs. She also writes poetry. Arezu knows several languages including Pashto, Dari, English and Urdu. Arezu is an example of the commitment, perseverance and hard-work that YWC cherishes and inspires youth to exercise.

Arezu’s house is very far from YWC’s office and the center of Kabul City. Every day, she exits her house at 7:00am and takes several buses and other public transportation to arrive YWC’s office at 9:00am. She begins her day by teaching some of her YWC colleagues Pashto in the cold office room where often there is no electricity or wood to use for warmth. After that, she goes to a computer hardware course, teaches English, and goes to university. She also assists other YWC members in conducting a city-wide research on street harassment. As a YWC member, on Saturdays Arezu speaks to youth in several learning centers about issues that women face in Afghanistan.
Like her name, which means “hope,” Arezu brings the hope of a brighter future to Young Women for Change and her country.
